Paris, the city of love with its Champs Elysées and Eiffel Tower, will be coming closer to Panama.

Air France, the airline that together with KLM transported 77 million passengers in 2012, will set up a direct flight between France and Panama in late 2013.

The official announcement will be given today in the French capital, along with details on the operation that will change the way not only Panamanians, but all Latin Americans, will be able to reach Europe via Panama.

Initially, the airline would schedule three weekly arrivals to Tocumen International Airport, leaving the possibility of adding a fourth frequency in 2014.

Air France would be joining Iberia, KLM, and Condor, companies that already offer flight connections between Panama and the old continent. These connections have proved valuable in increasing the number of businessmen and tourists who reach the country. In the first four months of this year, 239,000 European tourists were reported to have entered Panama.

Last February the nation’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) created a memorandum of understanding with its French counterpart to allow for the arrival of airlines from this European country to Panama.

The agreement was signed in France and set forth the traffic rights between the two countries.

When Panama first approached Air France three years ago, they discussed the possibility of having a shared frequency with Costa Rica, but the company ultimately decided to establish a direct flight to Tocumen.

Panama will become the eighth country in Latin America to have a direct flight on Air France. The company announced that in 2013 it will operate the route between Paris and Montevideo, Uruguay, as part of its plan for expansion in the region.
